3D Evaluation of the Fall Protection Harness

Total Contact is supporting the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the investigative research of using whole body surface scan data to improve the fit and safety of fall protection harnesses for construction workers.
We have devised a new sampling strategy to capture this population with 216 subjects, fitting and scanning them with fall protection harnesses while standing and
suspended, for a total of 1080 whole body surface scans analyzed for fit. As the criteria for fit is loosely defined, we have devised a method of defining fit in a repeatable, objective, and quantitative manner using 3D surface scanning and advanced image processing techniques. The fit definitions will be translated to devise real-world fit solutions to provide a means for guiding users through correct size selection. We have worked closely with NIOSH personnel, training them in the methods of measuring, landmarking, scanning, and extracting data.
